Second Annual Cory Moore Classic

Stuart, Iowa- The Cory Moore Classic is a charity basketball event developed to raise money for the Cory Moore Scholarship.  This commemorative event will be held in the Menlo gym on April 30 and May 1, 2010.

In 2005, Cory’s life was cut short in a tragic swimming accident and this event serves as a way for the West Central Valley community to keep his memory alive.

This year’s event features five Alumni basketball teams from Stuart and the surrounding communities.  Guthrie Center, Panorama and Nodaway Valley will be joining two WCV Alumni teams and the WCV Varsity on the court this year.

With construction of a new school taking place, this event will also be the last basketball games held in historic Menlo gym. This gives everyone a chance to watch a game where so many memories have been made!

Last year was the inaugural year for the Cory Moore Classic and it turned out to be a great event.  Enough money was raised to fund the first Cory Moore Scholarship, and give a WCV Senior a better opportunity to further their education.  This year, with additional help from the Dexter Sons of The American Legion, there will be two scholarship opportunities offered up through the Dollars for Scholars foundation.

The girls won their first round regional game against Nodaway Valley in Greenfield 55-46 on Saturday behind Maggie Marnin’s 34 points and 11 rebounds. She now has 455 points this season, 10th best in the state, to go with her 313 rebounds, good for 5th best. The Lady Cats travel to Audubon tonight to face the Wheelers who beat Guthrie Center 56-47.

The boys stayed home and defeated Red Oak in the first round of districts last night in Menlo 66-40. Greg Dudley led the team with 14 points and 6 rebounds. Mason Hasty was right behind with 13 and 6. The boys’ next game will be in Menlo on Thursday against Guthrie Center who advanced with a 64-58 overtime win versus Griswold. The Cats are 0-2 this season against GC, losing the first game on a last second three-pointer and losing the second after going scoreless for most of the 4th quarter.

The #4, #6, #7, and #10 ranked wrestlers are in Joint’s half of the bracket.

Session one for Class 2A starts at 1pm on Wednesday.

Maybe it’s just me, but is anyone else concerned that we have more finishers from the alternative school than we have students graduating with a GPA above 3.5? Am I just reading the newspaper wrong? It worries me a little I guess. Regardless, I wish all the graduates the best of luck in the future. School grades don’t necessarily translate to success down the road anyway, but they can’t hurt.
