A Pre-emptive Strike

March 21, 2007 |

University of Iowa officials recently purchased seven website addresses, including firekirkferentz.com, in order to stifle some of the criticism coaches and other athletic department officials receive.  At an initial cost of almost $700 plus about $25 per year per address to maintain, is this money well spent to protect the likes of Steve Alford and Kirk Ferentz from criticism? Or could that money be better spent somewhere else?

  1. I don’t know if I like the idea of the University spending my tuition money to buy up some pointless websites. If fans don’t like what a coach is doing the are going to find another way to voice their opinions besides this website. There are plenty of Hawkeye blogs that they could go to to do that. The “fire your coach” website is just the latest thing to give fans the opportunity to think they could be a better college coach. In the end I don’t think it will play any role in if the coach gets fired or not. If they wanted to do something useful with that money they could split it up and give us more than 1/4 of the original price back for our books when book buy back comes around.

  3. it’s pointless … I can’t get firekirkferentz.com? How about cankirkferentz.com; or dumpkirkferentz.com; any body with a thesaurus can come up with an alternative.

sounds like they’re getting thin-skinned over in Iowa City.

  7. Wow, what better way to instill confidence in your team and fans than to attempt to preempt rumblings of the head coach’s firing. Seems like that would create more friction than it’s worth.

It should be made clear, though, that it is the U of Iowa Athletic Corporation’s money, not student tuition $$ paying for the domain names. Alumni donations and money from corporate sponsorships/partnerships, etc.
