I Need Your Help!! — Race for the Cure 10/8/05
September 28, 2005 |
On Saturday morning October 8th, I’ll be participating in the Race for the Cure in Des Moines along with 14 of my family members. As many of you know, my grandma Mary Beaman suffered from breast cancer and we’re doing the walk as a tribute to her. Click http://www.desmoinesraceforthecure.org/aspx/Pledges.aspx\?PledgeID=173 to visit my pledge page and make a donation.
The Des Moines Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s Race for the Cure® funds provide no-cost mammograms for women and men in need of financial assistance.
At least 25% of net donations to the Des Moines Affiliate are put directly toward breast cancer research through the Komen International Grants Program, one of the nation’s most innovative, responsive grant programs. The Komen International Grants Program is unique in its focus on research projects with potential for high impact that may not be considered by other agencies. Available grants include: postdoctoral fellowships; population-specific grants; basic, clinical, and translational research grants; imaging technology; dissertation research; and honor awards.
The remaining 75% of donations raised by the Des Moines Affiliate stay in the Des Moines area to provide services to the women of our community. Most of that money is distributed though the Des Moines Affiliate’s Community Grants Program. These are grants made to local nonprofit organizations to provide educational, screening or treatment support services to the women of our community. Special emphasis is placed on grant applications focusing on breast health education among minority women in culturally appropriate formats, including appropriate literacy level; and projects providing free and/or low cost breast screening services for underserved and uninsured women in their communities.
My goal before October 8th is to raise $500 to support breast cancer research. Please visit my pledge page for the Des Moines Race for the Cure and make a contribution for the cause. I know there a lot of options for donations right now with Hurricane funds and the Red Cross and stuff, but this is a very worthy cause so please give what you can.
Thank you!
