Adios 2008
December 31, 2008 | 30 Comments
Before we tackle the new year, let’s take a look back at some Good Egg Gazette highlights of 2008.
The year started off with yours truly and our own Good Egg Gazette getting a little national blog-love. This along with a few controversies led to over 38,000 visits to our little slice of the web.
I bought a house in February. Yay for growing up. Or least for trying to make other people think I am.
Road trip anyone? I’m ready for another one, but remembering my trip to NYC with Woody will have to tide me over.
Construction crews made a lot of progress on the new Stuart Cultural Center this fall and winter. I see good things ahead for that group.
Over the course of 71 posts in 2008 we also discussed:
- Not voting for a new high school.
- Voting for a new high school.
- Why Stuart and Menlo and Dexter and Redfield love/hate each other.
- Local sports winners and losers. And some more winners.
- Stuart City Council and West Central Valley School Board ups and downs.
Did I miss anything this year?

My new year’s resolutions for 2009
More blogging
That’s about it. Oh yeah, and losing about 20 (or 50) pounds. And becoming independently wealthy. That’s it.
Here’s to a happy and healthy 2009 for all of my readers. I promise to continue to bring you irregular updates and pointless commentaries on the goings-on in and around Stuart.
Happy new year!

Nate, my fav was the trip to NYC. Hilarious and well told.
Nate, you won’t be able to blog much about your next trip…Remember, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas !!! I will have to agree the NYC trip was a great read.
True. It might be a short post.
well, lets hope w this New Year and a new officer, that something can be done about one of our council members BB – driving all over and not having his son belted in. Many times that I have seen him, his boy is turned around, clear up by the dash – yep, this is a real good role model from our community!!
seen on whowon.com nate that you and shrek are getting out of the racing business in 09.
12:23 am
What kind of role model are you? Do you obey all the laws and treat people with respect? Do you give 100% to everything you do?
Actions on the council are what we should be looking at here not whether they use seat belts or not.
12:23, I think you should apply for the open officer position and then you can enforce laws on seatbelts, littering and gossip. I agree, should be in a belt, but do you think maybe the kid got loose? Sure never happened to you and you also are always wearing yours. Lighten up, it’s a new year.
Nate, what is the status on the school construction? When is the high school and elementary supposed to be done?
What is the status on the long time business that seems to have closed down. We lost the hardware store and lumber company.
Slosses bought the store
what does a new yr have to do w enforcing your kid to wear a belt? what does it take, someone else to loose control and hit them, that makes them think the kid should have been in a belt? use your head and quit trying to make excusses. and yeah…it is a role model that other kids see, and yes i do wear my belt and enforce anyone in my vehicle to belt up also – so dont try to tell me that i dont. being on the council doesnt mean they dont get noticed outside of that – look at cory waddell, his life got talked about all the time and it wasnt “just for the council”. just because your on the council you dont have to obey by laws or thing about childrens welfare?? yeah, thats what i thought!!
Oh yes. I’m sure when one of the council members drives down the road all the kids in town run to catch a glimpse of their all-time, hometown, role model hero. NOT. Name one kid that can name all council members (or one) and pick them out of a crowd – and relatives don’t count! No one cares. And if, God forbid, anything does happen, that person has no one but himself to blame.
5:34 really smart giving kids credit, arent ya? and what the he–, lets play a little game here…grow up and relize the point that has been made in previous entries! if you cant figure it out(or dont want to), thats your problem!!
i believe mallory sold the building to sloss when he built the new one out south and I think someone else owns the lumberyard property. It is awfully hard for a new business owner to start up nowadays unless you have mucho bucks to back it.
You also have to have brains too. I don’t think the owner of the lumberyard was half as smart as Bob Schemel was.
Sloss’s just bought the building (not business, bld. only) and were not to take ownership for a while yet.
The lumber yard building and business was seperate.
I agree with 10:07 completely.
Schemel made it because of his “other interests” in town. This guy had one shot and that was to take on the business of selling crap at high prices. The only way Schemel did that was to put it into houses and sell crappy houses. (lol) You know, a little something on the side……the way all of Stuart gets things done. When someone fails, either Sloss or Tiernan buys. Onward you good fellows of Stuart……tsk tsk.
Any small town business can not compete with the lower Des Moines prices. But, it is great to have the stores in the small towns. It is not easy for everyone to go to Menards or Hy-Vee for all their needs. We should be thanking the businesses for being there.
Why would you criticise someone for buying a business in Stuart. Is it because you tried and failed or what. It sounds like you should be living in a big city.
Schemmell’s houses are nice houses and it is obvious you have not been in one of them or you would know.
What have Sloss or Tiernan bought from someone that failed?
Schemmell’s houses are not quality and that’s a fact!
12:01, you are so correct.
Schemmell’s houses are just as good as any $100,000.-$150,000. you are looking at.
You can’t compare it to a $200,000. Sargent house or Voss one as you have to compare apples to apples.
A Sargent house for $200,000? ya right I think they are a minimum of $300,000.
If you are comparing Schemmell homes to Sargent homes, you are looking at ones 10-20 years old. Schemmel has not built any homes in the last few years.
So, look in the Sargent addition of Stuart and they sell for $100,000-$150,000.
Schemmell’s in Dexter are similar.
Schemmell misrepresented to the new owner what was being sold at the lumber yard. Schemmell was buying the lumber for his construction of homes. The new owner didn’t have a chance to succeed. All of Schemmell’s building are of poor quality.
Schemmel was not building that many homes – maybe 1 a year.
The new owner was not doing all the things that Schemmel did like open on Sat., open till 6 pm during the week, keeping the U-haul line, having the Radio Shack part, and knowing what he was selling. The new owner did not have a clue. HE did not even live in the area. These all hurt his chances of having a good business.
All new homes in the last decade are built the same….build it as cheap as you can and get as much profit as possible. Any house can “look nice,” but that doesn’t mean it is quality. Not to mention that they build those houses fast and make errors or make it so the house will JUST pass inspections. They just see dollar signs!
How about a new topic. do we constantly have to be bashing someone. some really deserve it, but let’s agree that it really gets old.
How many are going to see the girls play at Wells Fargo arena Thursday night?
Game is still on despite the cold temperatures! Good luck Mr. Pauley and the WCV Wildcats!
