thank you to the poster for this…here’s the story on KCCI.com

SAN FRANCISCO — A California-based company announced plans Wednesday to build a new plant in Iowa.

SynGest, Inc. said the new plant will manufacture bio-ammonia and be built in Menlo, which is 40 miles west of West Des Moines.

The facility is expected to create 30 new full-time jobs.  Officials said they expect an additional 100 handling and transportation jobs are expected to be created to help support the plant.

The facility is expected to begin operating in three years.  It will use corn stalks, cobs and other materials to create organic ammonia, which is used by farmers as a fertilizer.  Officials said the material would be collected from nearby farms, some 75,000 acres.

“Clearly the state is the No. 1 corn-producing region in North America,” said Jack Oswald, CEO of SynGest. “But we were also influenced by two other factors. Iowa offers a smart and productive workforce, and the state is very proactive in its support of innovative agricultural and renewable energy technologies.”

The plant is expected to generate $25 million to $35 million in revenues for the company.

SynGest officials said the Iowa plant would be the first “better-than-100 percent ‘green’ environmental project of its kind in the world.”

  5. Unbelievable! The negativity in this community is the kind of stuff we really don’t need nor want to pay attention to. Go piss in someone else’s cheerios. It’s very common for these types of plants to bundle. The ethanol plant will be a natural draw to this kind of business. Good for Menlo and good for the entire community. Notice it’s green….another plus.

  11. Nate:

Thanks for posting the news. To the posters who say “this won’t happen”, I want to say that this project certainly has a ways to go, but I hope we can acknowledge that this is good news for the area.

In these economic times, any entrepreneur who wants to establish such a project should be heralded. If successful, Menlo, Iowa will be viewed around the world as introducing green bio-ammonia to the world.

In the days, weeks, and months ahead, we will need the area’s support as we work hard to make this project a reality. The project’s organizers, working in concert with us, the area economic development group, will be performing a great amount of public outreach.

In the meantime, you can listen to the CEO’s comments about the project and area by scrolling to the bottom of the page after clicking the link on this page: http://www.iowadevelopment.com/news.cfm?article=951.

  19. I have emailed Jack Oswald a few times first thanking him for picking our town for the first 100% bio plant. Second to set up having our state Senator Grassley available at the ground breaking ceremony. He loved the idea and said he would keep me posted. So that will be awesome for stuart/menlo. These two towns will finally get the positive recognition they deserve.

  21. I heard a rumor that the gravel road (Talon Ave)that runs between the Ethanol plant and the site for the new Ammonia plant will be re-routed to the east because of the increased traffic. Does anyone know if this is true or who I could contact to find out?
I think that these businesses are a great boost to our local economy. I know first hand that the commute to DM everyday can be a pain.
I do think that we should keep on top of making sure that routine inspections are done to both facilities.

  23. Thanks to Mary. Mike, I don’t believe a determination has been made on the road. SynGest’s exact site layout has not yet been finalized.

I can assure you that as we converse here that SynGest’s leaders as sifting through the permitting regulations that they will need to comply with before they get started.
