Enough is Enough - Part 2

October 7, 2008 |

The behavior of certain students/athletes at West Central Valley has come under recent scrutiny. Who is to blame for this behavior? Is it the students themselves? Maybe it’s mom and dad’s fault. How about the teachers or coaches or the administration as a whole?

Today we’re focusing on the kids. We continue to see examples of students who hold in complete disregard anyone in authority. A prime example of this is the student body-elected Homecoming King calling one school employee a “fucking bitch” and a “cunt” and telling another to “suck his dick.” Is this acceptable from a student? It certainly is not tolerable from a so-called king. What is it about this type of behavior that draws other students in and persuades them to elect someone with this attitude as royalty?

Week after week we see leaders of the football team make poor decisions. Not because they don’t have the talent, but because they suffer a complete lack of self-respect and self-dignity. Slinging your helmet across the field is not ok. Showing up your teammates is not ok. Throwing a tantrum like a 2-year old is most definitely not ok. Why are other team leaders so afraid to step up and put an end to this?

It’s time for these kids to take accountability for their actions. It’s time for these kids to take responsibility for their actions. It isn’t someone else’s fault. It isn’t someone else’s job. Find out what discipline means. Begin to act like the young adults you are. This isn’t a game. More is expected of you. It’s time you learn that enough is enough.

More tomorrow…

  1. The seniors should be setting the example and being the leaders. Who are our Seniors playing football?
    1. Max Miller, not a leader, a troublemaker
    2. Kyle Brondum, need I say more
    3. Tanner Pease, wasn’t he thrown out of a game?
    4. T.J. Wahlert - a good kid and player but not a leader
    5. Bergeson - again a good kid and player but not a leader

  2. Anonymous on October 7, 2008 3:25 pm
  3. Miller’s behavior is definetly a violation of the good conduct policy. Do you really think anyone one in the school (administration, board, coaches) has the guts to enforce this?

    ANSWER: Not a chance

  5. How can jennings be both the head football coach and athletic director? Who evaluates jennings? Does he write his own eval? Why did the board allow this to happen?

  7. where is tod when you need him? I am curious what he thinks needs to be done. Andy too. What do we do Andy? And don’t give me a smart ass answer.

  9. Nate, your mom needs to grow up and keep her high school opinions to herself. The staff doesn’t need and adult who just lives to piss some kid off. Ms. Westre, grow up. I have no use for a grown up who picks on kids, much less some teacher aide with power.

  10. Anonymous on October 7, 2008 4:04 pm
  11. Nate, while you are preaching to kids, take a look at the example that is put forth at your place of business. You call that funny. Hypocritical to ask high schoolers to “accept responsibility” while grown ups around them act like jerks.

  12. Nate on October 7, 2008 4:06 pm
  13. It was her life-long goal to get a job where she could pick on kids all day.

  14. Nate on October 7, 2008 4:09 pm
  15. Would you like to give an actual example? Or just use the word example?

  17. wow, here we go. Sounds like people are posting that really don’t know what they are talking about.

  18. Anonymous on October 7, 2008 8:02 pm
  19. This is not the 1st time that Kyle Brondum was suspended from a game for bad behavior @ school. He did the same thing last year and it was not the same teacher/aide.

Nate is right….kids do need to be held accountable for their actions.

  21. Ok, OK, I am not afraid of posting my name. I have no problem with it. I agree that students that cannot act responsibly should be held accountable, I will not speak on any students name, because remember they are teenagers (I don’t condone their behavior) and I wasn’t there, so I don’t know the facts. But Both need to be held responsible, the Coach/Activities Director & the students as well as the Administration, time and time again we see that policies are set but they are not enforced. I agree why did our school board and administration allow a coach to also be the athletic director, it seems that this policy too changes with the board, because I know that it has gone back and forth a couple of times, I think the Superintendent as well as the Board of Directors needs to hold Coaches/Activity Directors and all staff accountable for enforcing the good conduct policy. The old saying that we heard when we are in school, is your image affects the reputation of the school also. Honestly, it seems possible that the Board and the Superintendent (who still is an outsider, who doesn’t support our communities) need to be held accountable for allowing this type of behavior to continue on both sides. It will continue on the way it has always been when the board is ruled by the Superintendent instead of the Board ruling the Superintendent.

  23. As far as the AD situation goes, nobody wanted the job so Mr. Jennings said he would take it because he taught at the school. The problem isn’t that he is a coach & AD it is that he is a coach, AD & teacher. Simply too much for one person to do. And as far as the kids being held accountable for their actions, if I remember correctly some kids were suspended during baseball for inappropriate conduct. The conduct codes need to be enforced across the board for parents, fans, students, & athletes. There are many fans who seem to think their $5 entry allows them to verbally attack officials, coaches & players during games. This certainly contributes to the attitude of the athletes on the field for any sport.

  25. In my school, students sign a code of conduct policy. They know what’s expected of them from the beginning. If they violate it, they don’t play.

  27. Anyone who would stick up for the 3 seniors is wacked! I will tell you straight Kyle has always been violent and remember who his family is. his mom threatened Joanie on the answering machine. just like when uncle Brian got bailed out all the time.Jonie is great at the school and the kids. yes Im sure Nate it is hard to post the stupid crap people say about your mom. but it takes alot more guts and respect to do this for your mom then calling up people and calling them all those words the Harris clan says. And about the Miller- Pease problem hopefully coach Long wont take that bull when basketball starts.Bruce Miller never goes anywhere without booze on his breath. End of discussion!

  28. anonymous on October 8, 2008 8:32 am
  29. Bruce thinks he knows everything and his kids are the best. Ha Ha! I happen to remember a few years back when one of our basketball boys got hurt during a b.b game, Max was in the croud because he wasnt good enough to play varsity ball, when the kid got hurt Max started laughing. and it wasnt quietly. Everyone heard it. I was setting about 3 rows above him and when he did it his older brother on the bench turned around and told him to shut up. wow thats who is representing our team. And all this college scholarship crap, no way. No college coach would even touch the Miller family.

  31. Todddd is only here when he has something to gain from the situation. New school, higher pay for him and his crew, etc. Besides he is a referee.

  33. Millers; again another generation at work. Karla, her brothers, all the same.

  35. I think it’s amazing to hear everyone’s opinion on my mother. Have you seen her work in the school? Have you? Do you even know her? I don’t care who you are, you don’t deserve to be called a cunt and a fucking bitch by a teenager. Do you honestly believe he had the right to do that? If you think his actions are justified then good for you. How many of you actually work in a school? Do you know what kids are like? Do you know how many times my mom, among others, is called a vulgar name? Do you know how many times she has been pushed by a student? Do you? No. You hear one damn story and assume that my mom IS a bitch. Well she’s not. She loves her job, and she’s good at it, and heaven forbid she enforce the rules now and then. This whole thing makes me sick. What if it was your mom that had a snowball thrown at her face, or an apple thrown at her? And yes I did say thrown, not accidentally dropped. What if you were called a cunt by the school’s beloved “homecoming king”? Such a great example for WCV. Do you realize how much shit these kids get away with? When is enough enough? My mom is a wonderful person, and to those of you who are saying otherwise, you don’t know the whole story. She did not provoke this behavior from that student, he brought it on himself. I think some of you should also get out a dicitonary and look up the word consequence. If kids don’t have consequences, how will they learn?

  36. Anonymous on October 8, 2008 7:18 pm
  37. Lindsey
You are so right. Your mom along with all of the teachers and employees at the school should be treated with more respect that what they get.
Parents are not helping their kids by allowing them to talk with such disrespect and then standing up for them. They are creating troubled teens who will not get along with their bosses, spouse and co-workers when they get in the real world.
They will always feel like they are right and everyone else is wrong. Their parents have promoted this kind of thinking in them.

Your parents did a good job teaching you and your brother to respect others and it shows.

  39. First, I would like to thank Joanie and all the other school workers for all they do for the school district. I would hate to think what I might do if anyone said those words to my mother.
Sometimes I wonder why anyone would want to work in the educational system. I know we have many dedicated people working as teachers and also other jobs to keep the school in operation. It’s time to teach students who don’t respect authority a lesson. What good is it to have a “code” when it is not enforced? This would be a good place to start correcting the students who won’t obey the rules. The parents of these students should be ashamed.

  40. WTF? on October 10, 2008 9:29 am
  41. wow im glad all you dirtbags think our seniors dont do a dam thing during football season. Tj Wahlert is a defensive leader and so is Max so unless you know what they say in the games and practice why dont you pull your head out of your ass
Isnt mikel pickett a senior too? Gee way to forget one shows how much you pay attention to our games and players..Point out all the downfalls and not some of our successes

  42. Anonymous on October 10, 2008 9:42 am
  43. WOW! Low blow! Why would you talk about someones family. That is very uncalled for. I don’t think that it is right to attack a kids family for their actions! And all of you who are attacking the MIller family and Kyle’s family is wrong. It’s not like ALL of the family is to blame!

its nice how whoever wrote that knows everything about us seniors on the team. !st of all if your gonna talk trash about me say who you are and all come to you and talk to you about it. IM NOT A LEADER? yeah i may mess up and lose composure sometimes but that doesnt mean im not a leader i help people up when they are down, i tell them to get it next time, and tell them what to do to be a better player. If you have been to a game then you will see me helping people up from other teams all the time to show the other players on my team how to be a good sport so keepo it shut aight

  46. Alec Bergeson on October 10, 2008 9:52 am
  47. Tj.i think your a leader on the defensive side. And they choose to see the bad sides These cats that say theyre our fans really arent the just put us down and then love us when the team comes out on top of the game

  48. Alec Bergeson on October 10, 2008 10:07 am
  49. And im not a leader on the football team? i wonder why since i played last in the 8th grade.. And all the other seniors are helpign me out during this season like mikel, max, kyle, tanner, and tj they all help me so dont question their leadership abilities since there kids helping kids

  50. Anonymous on October 10, 2008 12:53 pm
  51. Alec
you are doing a great job in football. Where were you in 9-11 grades?
Keep playing hard. you are an asset to the team.

  52. Susan on October 10, 2008 1:01 pm
  53. Lindsey, I don’t really know your mom, but I don’t need to know her to judge the abuse she’s taken as indefensible.
Young Kyle is a very, very lucky young man that I’M not his mother. I would have kicked his ass three ways to Sunday, and then some. With all the issues raised, it all comes back to consequences and accountability. Every action has a consequence, and kids need to learn at a young age that they will be allowed to suffer the consequences of their choices. Period.

  54. LL on October 10, 2008 4:41 pm
  55. Boys keep your chins up and don’t let them get you down. Show your leadership, and keep the vulgarity out.

  57. I haven’t been to any sporting events this year, but there has been so much talk about the lack of respect and sportsmanship. Why aren’t these students being held accountable for their actions? Who is leading these children? Everybody that participates in sports are a direct representation of our school and our communities.(incluing coaches, students that play or watch the games, parents and fans) I really don’t want our district to be known as the “DIRTY TEAM”. Why aren’t there consequences for bad behavior? My kids “LOVE” Ms Westre. Why won’t the Administration and school board support Ms Westre when she tried to enforce the rules? She obviously cares about the kids. I highly doubt that she would “PICK” on the students. She just wants them to know what is acceptable behavior and the importance of citizenship. She is taking the responsblilties of her job seriously.

  58. Anonymous on October 11, 2008 6:16 pm
  59. you obviously don’t really know ms westre.

  63. u guys dont think the seniors arent leaders?, how bout a little info from an underclassman, these seniors are doin everything they can in practice and in games, even though they lose their composure at times, they still lead this team, through the rough times and smooth times.

  64. Dylan Moore on October 13, 2008 12:28 am
  65. i have to agree with Steven, our seniors are 10 times the leaders any of you would be in their situation. They put up with the so called fans who sit there and use vulgar language directed towards us during the games. We are high school students, we aren’t going to be perfect. I personally respond better to criticism when it isn’t yelled at me during the middle of a football game with curse words in it. I don’t know how any of you feel about that.
If you think our attitudes are bad, what is writing about it on a blog of some biased son of a teacher’s aide going to do about it? Gotcha there.

  67. Excellently put Dylan.

  75. i think its kind of pathetic how people are getting on here and complaining about the players conduct and how they are vulgar and then turn around and just start slamming their whole family. im not saying what they did was right but what makes you think that you are any better for doing it here?

  76. someone on October 13, 2008 6:08 pm
  77. I think Dan Obanion is a dumbass. He is so dumb. Fighting with everybody, trying to blame things he did on other kids, and letting his bowels go loose in other kids faces. he is a disgusting kid.

But on a better note, Jimmy Gulbranson is the SHIT!! i think he is the best football player and should start varsity football and basketball

    Thank you
