Good Egg Days Weekend

June 20, 2005 |

It was great to see everyone at Good Egg Days! A few thoughts on the weekend…

1) Overall I thought the parade was about average, however the Isiserettes were a great addition. But for me, the parade isn’t about the floats and the antique cars driving by as much as just doing some people-watching. I will forever be entertained watching people who show up wearing clothes that fit 80 pounds and 3 kids ago proceed to yell at their kids to be careful about running into the street for the candy and to sit down and be still, all the while waving a cigarette around and blowing smoke in their kids’ faces, and 5 seconds later the parents themselves risk their own lives dodging the wheels of a tractor for the delicious reward of a melted, run-over Tootsie Roll. I realize that Tootsie Rolls are wonderful treats and all, but trust me, they’ll still be on the road when the parade is over. And if they’re not, you can return a few cans to the grocery store and buy a few. I promise, no one is going to die of starvation if they don’t get that one last piece of candy, myself included.

2) The food stands were great as always. I myself can never get enough grilled hot dogs, corn dogs, or funnel cakes.

3) Due to some scheduling conflicts, unfortunately I wasn’t able to play in the 3-on-3 basketball tournament or in the alumni baseball game. It was probably for the best anyway…it’s never fun to make the drive back to Kansas City having to manage ice packs around a pulled hamstring. I haven’t heard the injury reports yet, but I know how I would feel after playing ball again. I’m sure sales of Ben Gay and Icy Hot are up today!

4) The street dance and Stone Thro…what can I say? I had a fantastic time and from the looks of things so did most everyone there. It was great getting a few moments to talk to a lot of people I haven’t seen for a while. A special thanks goes out to everyone involved in organizing the night, particularly to Ruby’s Pub for preventing me from getting thirsty, and especially to the guys of Stone Thro for tearing it up on stage for 4 hours.

5) And also thank you to everyone who took a few moments to visit with me this weekend. If there’s one thing that keeps me coming back home, it’s the people. Which leads me to a couple items of gossip - feel free to comment…

a) Apparently a certain former administrator, perhaps the middle school principal, had a slight problem in the way he addressed female associates and coworkers. This “alleged” attitude led to his not-so-voluntary resignation.

b) I also heard that a certain law enforcement officer is somewhat corrupt and works on the bartering system, aka I’ll scratch your back, you scratch mine. This wasn’t a widely heard rumor, however, it’s worth noting that it was mentioned to me seperately by multiple individuals.

Anyway, it was great to see everyone again, and hopefully I’ll be able to get back to town a little more often. As soon as I hear anything worthwhile I’ll make a post on here, and as always, feel free to post your comments. Until next time…
