I had this plan
September 22, 2005 |
I was going to do some studying and lay down some of my ideas on the school board and all the issues that go with it. Then the Chiefs went 2-0 and my precious few moments in between answering the phone and selling tickets disappeared. So…I’m going to push this topic back a while.
In the meantime, I want to talk a little about the football team. During my last two years in high school our team went winless. I didn’t play, but I can relate to what the team is going through right now. It’s not like my baseball and basketball teams were ever at the top of the win column either. So needless to say, success has been relatively hard to come by at West Central aside from maybe cross country and lately the basketball teams. A lot of people in town are calling for Coach Pease to step down, and there was speculation that he would call it quits after last season, but so far he still handles the reins. But the question I ask is “How long can this go on?” The boys basketball team made a move a while back to bring in a coach who was a proven winner. What’s keeping the football team from doing the same? At what point does a coach realize what he’s doing isn’t working? Don’t you think 30-some straight losses should point that out? I realize the team is young and inexperienced this season, but how long can that be the excuse? So this leaves us with a few options:
Option A - Do nothing. Let Coach Pease finish the season and go out on his terms, whether at the end of this season or when his contract ends. A lot of coaches have bad stretches (but not usually for this extended period) and he deserves a chance to turn things around himself.
Option B - Let Pease finish the season, but start looking for a replacement today. Get the same people together that helped hire the basketball coach and make finding a new coach the top priority.
Option C - Fire Pease now and let somebody else finish the season. See if a coaching change does the kids any good and let them try to build up some positive momentum for next year. Based on the results of the rest of the season, give the new coach a chance to return next year or start the search for another coach immediately.
Let me hear your ideas…
