No more FOX?

November 2, 2006 |

Those of you in Stuart who like to watch Hawkeye basketball or “American Idol” may soon be out of luck. A dispute between Mediacom and station operators could lead to KDSM being dropped from Mediacom’s channel lineup starting as soon as December 1.

Like any argument, there are two sides.
1. Mediacom doesn’t want to pay what the stations are worth.
2. Sinclair (KDSM’s owner) is unfairly lumping unwanted stations in with the ones Mediacom wants to pay for and keep.

Mediacom users who still want to watch KDSM shows do have options, however. The FOX affiliate will still be available over-the-air, as always, so get those old antennas ready. For subscribers who wish to switch to a satellite service such as DirecTV, FOX is even willing to provide a rebate if certain conditions are met.

Whose fault it is isn’t the real focus here. The bigger issue is that central Iowa viewers who subscribe to Mediacom may be without a channel that carries many of the most popular broadcasts on television.

***

How will this situation turn out? Is anyone already planning on switching to a dish? Let me know…

  1. 2 Teachers Lose Licenses For Sexual Misconduct With Students
Two Iowa teachers have been permanently barred from the classroom for allegedly having sexual contact with students.

The Board of Educational Examiners revoked the license of Daniel Duello, a former physical education teacher and coach at the Vinton-Shellsburg district’s high school. Richard Bardole, a former Ogden music teacher, surrendered his license.

Duello pleaded guilty in October to sexual exploitation by a school employee. He was accused of having sex in 2004 with an 18-year-old student at Washington High School in Vinton. Duello faces up to five years in prison when he is sentenced Dec. 7.

Bardole resigned as Ogden Middle School’s music instructor in May, one a week after he told police he molested two former students and one 12-year-old student.

Bardole is on probation for two years.

  3. May I ask what was the purpose of “Anonymous” posting the article about the 2 teachers who had their licenses revoked?

Yes, the teaching profession has their “bad apples” which destroyed the trust that has been established over the centuries. Thanks to those “knuckleheads”, being a teacher has fallen further down the ranks of the respectable professions.

Is “anonymous” trying to say something about the WCV faculty? Why not come right out and say it? If you have a complaint, why don’t you do something about it?

Sure, it is easy to hide behind the “anonmymous” tag and complain that nothing would be done or that “you heard” that it would be swept under the rug by the administration. If you have a complaint, call the police, call the Department of Education, call your school board member besides calling the building principal and superintendent.

Instead of spreading rumors, get off your butt and do something about it.

Yes, I am a teacher and I am protective of my colleagues, however, if a teacher is abusing students, then that teacher (a friend of mine or not) needs to be removed.

  5. i never knew you were that dumb to not know. everyone in this district was talking about it right down to the stuart librarian and city hall women.

  7. Thank you for taking time to bash my intelligence. Since you are referring to a particular HS teacher, let me clue you in…when the supposed indescretions were taking place I DID NOT KNOW what was going on. Was I “dumb” as you insinuated? No. I was busy doing my job and tending to my family. You know what? Just because I work in the HS doesn’t mean that I know everything that goes on with every teacher.

I have come to take every rumor that comes around with some skepticism. Experience tells me that people who have questionable intelligence like to spread rumors which become grossly distorted.

Eventually I heard the rumors and refused to believe them, but then I was made aware that they were true.

So what do you want to do now? If you want to bitch and moan about it, then call the police and file a complaint. Call the Dept. of Ed. and file a complaint. Call the Dept. of Human Services and file a complaint.

Or you can continue to hide behind anonymity and call me “dumb” when I actually knew about the situation. Apparently you couldn’t tell that I was wanting the person who posted the teacher article to have the guts to come right out and say what they mean.

Too often, people just want to shoot their mouth off—guess it is easier than actually doing any work.

  11. Excuse Me, But what did the Teacher article have to do with “No more FOX”? And when the post on Phil Padilla went up, why wasn’t any of this discused then. Yes, everyone has heard about this, it is old information now.

  13. its true then. it really happened. the administration said it didnt.

  15. Mr. Broman, the fact that you know about the teacher/student relationship and are not outraged about your “friend’s” behavior speaks volumes and it does show that you are dumb, to say the very least. Whether or not you like it, your “fine” colleague is a man who preys on young girls. He is a predator of the most vile kind.

I don’t care if this girl was a senior in high school or turned 18 during the relationship. It is EXTREMELY inappropriate. It is, in fact, ILLEGAL in many states. He should have been fired immediately, reported to the Board of Ed, and had his license revoked permanently.

A parent sends their child to school thinking that the teachers are going to keep them safe. They don’t expect the TEACHERS are the ones who are posing the threat. You say you were too busy doing your job to know what was going on? Doesn’t that include protecting your students and having their welfare first and foremost in your actions? You, along with your colleagues at WCV high school, have failed your job. You are an enabler, sir. You are allowing this to happen again. You are not putting your students first. You are putting your friends first. Maybe your license should be revoked too.

  17. I guess this topic coming back into discussing will give everyone something to “gossip” about for the next month or so.

Teachers are supposed to be professional arent they?

  18. Neighboring Teacher on November 13, 2006 12:44 pm
  19. I would think this would fall under the Mandatory Reporter Law. Teachers are required to report abuse (physical, mental, sexual) they see or know to be real. If they fail to do so, their license can be revoked.

Sorry to say, a teacher dating a student would be abuse.

What would your school do if all the high school teachers lost their license due to failure to report abuse and improper conduct?

  21. Let’s not bash Mr. Broman. I am unaware of the student/teacher relationship being discussed, but it is obvious from his comments that he did NOT know it was happening at the time.

Who is to say whether or not he is “outraged”? Anyone who ever had to suffer through one of his biology classes (sorry, Mr. B - science was not my thing) knows his character enough to be doubtful he is an enabler.

Obviously the original poster was trying to stir some old news/gossip up, otherwise we’d be discussing the FOX situation Nate was inquiring about.

  23. It is apparent that I am taking a risk by posting my opinion along with my name. Things that I say are liable to be taken out of context resulting in my original intention being lost.

“Anonymous- 10:47 a.m.” has taken me to task. However, where did I ever say that I wasn’t “outraged” by that teacher’s actions? Where did I refer to him as my “fine” colleague (your quotation marks, not mine)? Since when does “doing my job” NOT involve protecting my students?

I heard the rumors- first from the students, BUT, I refused to believe them because past experience has shown me that students blow things out of proportion (as it turned out, not in this case).

Did I approve of what he has done? No. Was he confronted by other teachers, administrators, the girl’s parents? I honestly don’t know. Would I go to bat for him in his defense? No.

He is one of those “bad apples” that I referred to in one of my earlier blogs—a “bad apple” that has given my profession a black eye.

Members of the National & Iowa State Education Associations are afforded legal representation if legal action is taken against him, BUT, that doesn’t mean that he would be able to keep his job or license. It appears that no lawyer in this country could protect him.

Now, are you still questioning my integrity as a teacher? Do you still feel that I don’t take the safety of my students seriously? Do you still think that I approve of what has happened?

If so, that is very unfortunate, however, you are entitled to your opinion. It would be best that your opinion is based on fact.

Why don’t you mention this teacher by name? What is preventing you from doing so? If what has happened is known by everyone in this community, then why are you protecting his name?

Why don’t you take action? As I mentioned earlier, file a complaint with the police department, Dept. of Human Services and the Dept. of Education.

Yes, I am a mandatory reporter, but all I am going on is word from other teachers and students—not that particular former student or her parents or the accused teacher. So, what I am going on would be classified as “heresay”.

Bash me all you want. I stand by my word and my name.

Please enlighten me since I have been called “dumb”.

  31. I think that this has been swept under the mat by the administration. Hell, the student nor her parents wants to file charges, Cause”THEY’RE IN LOVE”
Mr. Staroca and Nat Powell are nearly the same age. I don’t believe that makes it OK. In fact it is wrong, but the teacher is not a “middle aged man that can’t keep it in his pants” So stop jumping to conclusions! I cannot understand though why it has been so HUSH HUSH. Staroca needs to be fired and his license revoked. When you become a teacher you take an oath and you are held to higher standards. This truely is a BLACK EYE for our school and our communities. Why hasn’t our school board and administration done something? Maybe it’s not true. Who knows?

  32. Anonymous on November 21, 2006 1:47 pm
  33. Even if they are in love, it was still wrong and this teacher should lose his license. Mary Kay Laterno slept with her student and she paid the price. It shouldn’t matter what the age difference is. Not only does this look bad for the school, but it looks bad for the profession of teachers as well. It is definitely inappropriate and should not be tolerated. And it is absolutely shameful that some on this site would accuse a teacher like Mr. Broman of not being ethical. Stuart may be small, but secrets can still be kept. And not everyone is wrapped up in all the gossiping and rumors that go around. If everyone knew about it, why didn’t someone confront the administration about it and ask that something be done.

  39. hey tod - do you really have to bring your nonsense to the internet? you really love a conflict don’t you? Im sure you are a great family man, sincerely. I never thought the bullshit you spouted in your classroom would spill over into the internet but that day has come. please, for the love of god, start waiting tables at Lincolns lounge and stop infecting the good people of this world with your tunnel vision.

I thought I was safe from you. stay off my internet.

  40. Tod Broman on December 17, 2006 9:51 pm
  41. John W- you are entitled to your thoughts and opinions. I’ll admit that we had our numerous differences and there were instances that I should have kept my mouth shut when it came to something that occurred between us.
I have made many mistakes and I try to learn from them. Yes, you can teach old dog new tricks for I have made changes. It appears that your hatred of me since graduating 9 (?) years ago hasn’t changed.

I comment on these blogsites, because I feel that I have something worth saying. I can provide another viewpoint. Am I always right? No. Does everyone else think that my viewpoints are BS like you do? I don’t think so.

Life goes on and I have to deal with different students every year. I have too many things to worry about other than allowing a hatred to continually fester inside of me.

If you don’t want to see me on “your internet” then don’t read what I have to say.

Good luck to you. I hope that life treats you fairly.
