Post-Good Egg Days thoughts
June 15, 2008 |

Stone Thro put on a helluva show Saturday night. The weather was perfect. The street dance was packed both inside and out. Karaoke had a great turnout on Friday night too. Thanks to Tom for sporting the Ruby’s duds.
It sounds like the carnival was ok maybe, or at least it was better than last year. Any thoughts?
I sure could have used a corn dog or a funnel cake this weekend.
I’m glad the weekend is over, but at the same time I can’t wait til next year. Thanks to everyone who helped organize all the events. Stuart is lucky to have the Good Eggs that we have.

ESPN.com writer Bill Simmons made a brief mention of Iowa 6-on-6 basketball is his NBA Finals Game 4 running diary. Check it out if you have a few minutes. The comment is at the 7:52 mark.

My basement is dry, the neighbor mowed his yard today for the 3rd time this year, and my new kittens haven’t torn my house up yet. Life is good. Until next time…

1. I think since this dance was such a good time, you should throw an end of summer one too… like in August, the weekend before school starts. Good idea? Yes, I think so.
2. The carnival was ok except it needs to be where the people are at. When I walked through, there weren’t more than a dozen kids around. That’s probably because all the kids were at the soccer, basketball, etc. tournaments. The organizers need to bring the carnival to the park. Set it up in front of Cyclone or over in the space where the car wash and the William’s blue building is. Hell, set it up on the football field if nothing else. At least all kids would have access to it.
3. If you wanted a funnel cake you would have had to wade through the flood waters to get to it. Poor funnel cake stand. All wet now.
Now I know that everybody is going to have a fit but I think we need better people deciding our Good Egg Days just a thought. I have had alot of people say that they SUCK I have heard people say they are TIERED of stone thro the carnival needs to be down by the park and we need to do something to get good venders in the park I can remeber the days that the park filled up at noon on Friday and everybody stayed intill Sunday night at 6. What has happened? I want the good ole days back and as far as the kiddie parade it is a loss cause it is pathetic they walk what a block and the baby contests come on same old thing and the talent show 1 or 2 people from here and that is it? Sorry just my feelings
1.) Take Good Egg Days away from the Chamber. You can thank Sara Lee Blevins, Lisa Sherman, Julie Shepherd, and Audrey Wells for the poor events. They think they know everything.
2.) The Council needs to take Good Egg Days over. Simple as that.
3.) Stone Thro is just a money maker for the drinking establishments. You get the town misfits up there and that’s about it.
4.) Are we STUART GOOD EGGS or STUART - TIME WELL SPENT? Make up your minds!
You are correct when you say the chamber has ruined Good Egg Days. Audry Wells is the worst. She wants to run the whole show. I remember when Jerry Vitzhum got a really nice carnival to come. They had 6-8 safe rides. The carnies were clean cut and they helped clean up the area when they tore down. They didn’t rob you at the ticket bootheither. I don’t know why they can’t get them back. They were busy day & night for the whole 3 days. I think that they should have never changed the dates. When the chamber kept going back and forth from August to June and back several times again is when it went downhill fast. There’s no Gene Jirack watermelon feed. No fried egg sandwiches. The chamber wants to charge the vendors so much that nobody can afford to come. This year not a funnel cake, corndog, snowcone, Asian food was to be found. In fact, when I went up for lunch at 12:30 the shelter house was out of everything. There was only 2 food vendors in the park and they ran out fast too. How disapointing. No car show and shine. No tractor pulls. The Bill Riley talent search was a crock. I thought that Jon Peasley and the young woman that sang were the best talent there and they didn’t even place. What a CROCK! Who were the judges anyway?
As for Stone Thro, they were good. They always are. I do think that whomever is in charge/liable for the street dance should not allow under aged patrons through the gates, unless they don’t serve acohol. I witnessed several under age kids drinking. I left. I also informed the PD. Our Mayor is determined to change our Good Egg/stinkers to Clock Tower Days- Time Well Spent. Probably because she doesn’t want to be viewed as a “STINKER” Well, guess what the town motto won’t change the facts. So please Mayor leave well enough alone! It would take so many more hands working together with different folks in charge to bring back the Good Old Days when Good Egg Days was 3 days long.
anonymous on June 19, 2008 10:50 pm you said it all i agree we need the good egg days back not this fake crap how long has sara lee lived here? thats what i thought

Don’t forget to add Westre to that list of names.
Nate — new kittens??
Pictures, please.
Westre isn’t that important in this town!
oh
The chamber are the only people willing to help with Good Egg Days to get it set up. It is a hugh amount of work for them and I think they do a very good job.
I do think having Good Egg Days in August made for a better crowd. June has too many other activities competing for vendors, etc.
The funnel cake stand was under water and could not come due to flooding.
I do not think the vendor prices are why vendors do not come, they have other commitments or Stuart is just not as profitable as other places that have festivities the same time.
The Carnivals are extremely expensive and you about have to go with the companies that we had the last 2 years in order to pay for them. You are not going to get a great carnival company to come for a 2-3 activity as it costs too much to get them here and nobody wants to lose money.
Stone Thro draws a huge crowd. I doubt we would get that big of a crowd for another band.
Gene Jirak donated all the watermelons. I think he got them from a relative that plants them. Unfortunately Gene is no longer living and Yes, we all miss his watermelons.
I am not sure why we don’t have fried egg sandwiches anymore.
Maybe nobody was willing to contact Rose Acres about the eggs and like up people to cook them.
I suggest that everybody that was not happy with Good Egg Days and wants to make it better, call someone from the Chamber or City Hall and let them know you want to be involved next year. They will welcome the help and ideas.
11:35 pm
If you think the City is going to take care of Good Egg Days you will be disappointed.
I don’t think the taxpayers want to pay city people to line up Good Egg Days. It is a big job and requires alot of work and organization.
What about a horse shoe or a washer tourney???
If I remember correctly, Tim Baker set up horseshoes one year and it went very well. All it takes is somebody to set it up and get it going.
there WAS a horseshoe tourney on sunday.
OK here is my two cents worth for the good egg days celebration
First of all it does take alot to set things up and plan for the town celebration let me explain
A few years ago I wanted to try and make the Good Egg celebration better so myself and Dan Sackett went to Lone Tree Iowa on our own time and own money to get certified to be a pyrotechnician to be able to light off fireworks for the city durning the Good Egg Days weekend.
My self and Dan approached the busniess in town and the chamber and also recieved money from the hotel motel tax to put on the first show. All went well and the first year was about a $6000 dollar fireworks show. We estimated there were over 500 people that enjoyed the show. My brother in law Austin Vanlandingham stood at the gates by the football field asking for donations to try and keep this going on for years to come. We recieved around $400 in donations.
The Second Year we put a show on for around $3000 again going to business to get the money to help with the costs. Never recieved any from the hotel motel tax as I was told that they didn’t think it was money well spent and that no one wanted to see the fireworks show. Only recieved around $200 dollars at the gate in donations.
After some serious thinking on my part I decieded that the business’s in this town cannot be asked to support a fireworks show every year and that the public if the wanted to see it should be the main contributer to this cause. Look at the show that Earlham has that is mostly funded by the community. So the third year was a failure and there was no fireworks show. Maybe someday they will be back I am still willing to provided my services to put this event back into Good Egg Days but not at the business’s expense
Just my two cents worth

Nate, thanks for posting these comments. I tried to post some comments on Peggy’s blog, but she once again is sensoring the comments. I know that there have been some stupid comments made on all of the blogs about Stuart, but mine weren’t stupid. I just stated a few facts about the PD. I named, in my opinion, “The GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY.” Since I put her buddy & former police chief on the WORST of the WORST List, she won’t post my comment. I thought that a blog is a place to share everyones point of view on random subjects. Also for folks to approach other’s points of view with an open mind, to walk in someone else’s shoes. Well as long as it’s a sermon Peg wants to hear, she’s in the front PEW. If it’s not she’s heading to a different church. So, thanks again Nate.
This is the carnival company Clive got for their festival this year - http://www.superiorcarnivalequipment.com/index.html
It’d be great if we could have something like that. It could be set up around the park or on the football field so that there’s activity that will link the park and all the different sports tournaments.
It is too bad the Good Egg Days and the soccer tournaments are always on the same day. I hear so many kids that are torn between the 2. They are in the tournaments but would like to be able to enjoy more of Good Egg Days.
It is too bad one won’t change the weekend and Stuart can enjoy both.
Actually the soccer tournament keeps us in town because otherwise we would watch the parade, walk the park once or twice, carnival maybe… have lunch and be done. At least with the soccer tournament we have time in between the kids playing. If not for that we would have no reason to stick around at all.
Yep, the soccer tournament families wouldn’t want it any other way. Easier for them. And the vendors are the ones who do not like the soccer tournaments at the same time, because the fast food establishments get the business, not the food vendors in the park.
As long as the soccer tournaments are the same weekend as Good Egg Days, we will not move past ill-attended Good Egg Days. Simple as that. Just watch, the soccer people will be at the Chamber meeting before the decision is made before next year’s celebration. They’ll show up, say they won’t “be able” to come to Good Egg Days if it is switched, and then don’t offer to help with anything.
My 2 cents worth regarding Good Egg Days: The biggest problem with attracting vendors is the always changing date of Good Egg Days.
Most towns have their celebration on the same weekend year after year. The vendors return year after year and people know their favorites will be back along with a few new ones. These vendors are not going to give up a date in a town they have been going to for years and are successful, to do Good Egg Days where they don’t how much business they may get. For the first 25 or 30 years it was held on the the 3rd or 4th weekend of Aug. ( I don’t remenber for sure) and EVERYONE around knew when it was an turn out was great.
Go bach to the same date!!!!!!!
I AGREE I am for Good Egg Days in August!!
Most people would agree that the reason that there are very few people to help with this event is that the “select few” who DO run it can’t be bothered with the “lower class”. The celebration is headed just where it deserves to go if something doesn’t change. Unfortunately, as I’ve heard from many, Stuart doesn’t change. The ones who think they are better than the rest won’t let it.
12:26 you are so wrong
It is so hard to get anyone to come forward and help plan Good Egg Days and volunteer to head up something. Most people just won’t take their time to volunteer. It ends up being the Chamber people who do the majority of it.
And…….the reason is that they feel like crap when they do. That is because of the Chamber people who think they are the be all and end all.
