Weekly Recap

November 9, 2007 |

My ears are still ringing from the Puddle of Mudd concert last night so let me apologize in advance for this crappy post.

- Both measures on the ballot Tuesday passed easily. The Cultural Center could turn out to be even better than most people think. I’m glad it’s that much closer to becoming reality.

- The college basketball season is off and running. Is anyone suffering from March Madness yet? I better get some new flat screens from Santa this year.

What goes around comes around…what goes up must come down…now who’s cryin’, desirin’ to come back to me…

Sorry, just listening to some Alicia Keys. Have a good weekend Stuart.

  1. someone said on the other blog that they were getting boring….I agree. Maybe that’s a good thing. In Stuart, if the blogs are boring, that means that nobody is being mean or stirring the pot. Yea, that’s a good thing.

  5. Did anyone notice the school board minutes where they went into closed seesion to discuss Business Manager contract? According to Attorney General this is an illegal act. Under Open Meetings law, 21.5.i as used for board basis of closing, this law is only for Evaluation of professional competency and must be requested by person in question. The contract discussion should be in open session. Someone who knows any of the board members might want to relay the message they should study the law a little closer.

  9. since someone thinks the blogs are getting boring, here are some thoughts to get people going.

the bond issue for the high school will no doubt get going again ( i don’t know when )and the same old complaints such as the building site will come up. That being the case, I would suggest to the current school board to sell the property east of the catholic church immediately. i don’t care what they do with the proceeds. anyway, sell the land and look to build in downtown STUART. yes that’s right, the board should look to securing property west of the current high school. they could potentially own the entire city block. the only possible problem i see is the current building that warren varley and stuart realty own. I am sure something could be worked out with warren though. I have thought about this at length and really think this could work. More to come later.

ok, let’s get going. respond and tell everyone why this idea won’t work.

  11. P.S. this is WILDCAT SUPPORTER. I have no problem leaving my name just in case someone calls me out. I can almost hear you now. Someone will say “if you think this is such a great idea then leave your name.”

  13. Ok, if they were to sell the land by the church, which might very well need to happen, they should pick a site where eventually there could be room for the school building, room to add on if necessary, an auditorium (we won’t pay $3000 for a single event for the cultural center)and a sports complex, so that the money spent will end up being used for a facility that will endure time and hopefully growth in our communities in WILDCAT COUNTRY. I would also ask that maybe just once, we talk reasonably about our needs, so that if the board just happens to care about what we think, they might have constructive things to ponder instead of idiotic retoric. There just might be an answer if it doesn’t go balistic. Before you post, please give this some carefull thought. We really need this school, folks. We ALL need it.

  15. Redfield & Dexter got newer buildings and should be proud of them! But the land east of the Catholic church still stands in the way of many voting in favor of a new high school, plus people still remember the concurrent action situation. The Red Maple area west of Dexter would be a great neutral site. SELL the land by the church and it will pass!

  17. I’m not so sure about your suggestion 7:19. with all due respect, I don’t think your plan will work. Utilities, transportation questions come to mind.

  19. Congratulations to the city of Menlo for being on the chanel 8 news at 6:00. THe Kalbach station sign is getting repaired and is sure to put Menlo back on the map. It just shows that Stuart is not all and everything like they think they have to have all of the school. Wayto go MENLO!!!

  21. Did anyone see the View Point in the Dallas County News tonight?? It points out how Davey likes to control things including the papers. It is well worth the read!! Anybody wonder why the letter that Betty Rabbikis wrote to the DC News was not in the Stuart paper??? Well that’s because they wouldn’t print her letter. I guess free speach is not available in Stuart for that matter it never has been. You speak your mind and you can find yourself riduculed or possibly out of a job. Way to go Dr. Davey!!! Better hold onto that sand tighter as the article states!!!

  22. Anonymous on November 15, 2007 8:23 pm
  23. question for 8:13. I didn’t see the DC News, but was the article in question a letter to the editor or was it a column story written by one of the staff writters? Please respond.

  24. Anonymous on November 15, 2007 8:27 pm
  25. I for one would think the new board secretary would like a complete audit. She’s starting new and I would not want to be blamed for any of the mess created by Lisa and Davey!!!
I was reading the board minutes also and I am wondering what a flexible schedule is?? Is this going to be available for the rest of the support staff? Does the rest of the staff get family coverage for insurance??

  26. Anonymous on November 15, 2007 8:28 pm
  27. It is not a letter to the editor but the View point from the staff and about our right to freedom of the press!! They’ve got Dr Davey pegged for exactly what he is!!!

  29. 4:24pm…Speaking of “idiotic retoric”, where do you get your information that school events at the cultural center are going to cost $3,000?

  30. anonymous on November 16, 2007 9:56 am
  31. $3000 was the rouunded figure used to promote the vote. It is what the Hawkeye place is getting and no matter what the figure, the school will have to pay a fee to use the center. That’s too much whatever it is. As far as a new school, I thought it was supposed to be for education! Most of what I see is talk about an auditorium and sports complex, etc. SOme education!

  32. Anonymous on November 16, 2007 11:10 am
  33. I can’t believe the voters are ok with their taxes going up to support the cultural center but not for a new school. $3. for every thousand of property value is quite a bit. I would much rather pay that for a new school.
But the votes were cast and we have to live with it.

  35. If the highschool is going to be by the greenhouse as Anonymous on November 15, 2007 7:19 pm wants, then he/she and the others for it better accept that the middle school or district wide elementary will be in Stuart.

The greenhouse site is an obvious attempt at getting every building in this district on the east side. IT’S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN so don’t waste your time.

  37. Nate, where’s the new update?

  38. Anonymous on November 16, 2007 1:02 pm
  39. 11:10am Your taxes could be going up as little as $0.7900 per 1,000. Check out the information at the restore site and contact your council people to get it done.

  41. hello, is any out there? Is the suggestion to build in downtown Stuart for the new high school a good or bad idea? And why either for or agaisnt.

  42. Anonymous on November 16, 2007 3:18 pm
  43. I don’t mind the idea of building downtown but space may be an issue. The buildings in that area may not be able to be bought.
Alot of people want the athletic area close by. It would be just as it is now and no room for it to be closer in the future.
If you build where the current high school is, what do you use during construction? You can’t tear down the current school until after the new one is built.
If the issues can be worked out, I am for it.

A site in the country is not a good idea. Everyone ends up being bussed and you would not have the fire, ambulance, city utilities, and other services you get in town.
    Bad idea.

  44. WILDCAT SUPPORTER on November 16, 2007 3:30 pm
  45. Thank you 3:18 for your thoughts. Yes, those buildings downtown may not be able to purchase. I don’t know and neither does anyone else untill we ask. Utilize the current high school, while new construction takes place west. That should not be a problem. The middle school is a good example of this. And yes, the athletic complex would still be where it is. To me, the perfect spot would be the current youth soccer complex, however it is said the land is not suitable for construction. Also consider two story construction costs verses single story construction costs. Two story would have to be ada compliant. Let’s look for positive solutions rather than all the negative aspects we can find. let’s get this done!

  46. Anonymous on November 17, 2007 12:10 pm
  47. There is no expansion room downtown. No matter how much you think a person should give up their properties or homes - even if they are kind of shabby - you can’t force them to sell. For some, it’s all they have or can afford and though it’s in shabby condition to you, it’s home to them. And think people. So many elderly people live around the school. The post office is there. You can NOT displace these people or this place because you think it should happen.

  48. WILDCAT SUPPORTER on November 17, 2007 2:23 pm
  49. I think there are two, mabey three private homes on the city block and one apartment complex. I am not suggesting anyone should relocate or be forced to relocate. There is also a storage building west of the tennis courts. I think Digger Doug owns that.

As far as expansion is concerned, how much has stuart grown in the last ten years? Not much and the city population will not explode overnight just because of a new high school. The board should have population growth studies available in order to determine proper size to build. The fact of the matter is the high school population is approximetly 300 to 400 students. We as a consolidated community will probably not grow at a rate that would cause concern. Fifty years from now, who knows.

Building downtown was only a suggestion. It may not work. But frankly, no one yet has responded with any concerns or problems that are not able to be resolved.

I am certain of this. If the current school board continues to present to the public a bond issue with the presently owned district property - ( the forty acres east of the catholic church ) IT WILL FAIL AGAIN! And I say that with emphasis, but I also say it with sadness.

I have more positives about this proposal, but I will wait to see if anyone else cares to comment. Actually I am surprised that many other blogers haven’t commented. Mabey people are just sick and tired of all of this and wish it would all go away. Wish all you want, but it won’t change the fact that our children and teachers are suffering on a daily basis. They should and could have better.

  51. Quote from the DC News: The truth needs to be set free. Such is a lesson West Central Valley Schools superintendent Dave Arnolds needs to quickly learn.Recently his school district was the subject of a US internal lien for failing to sent its payroll taxes on a timely basis. Arnold didn’t like the way his district was being portrayed in the public spotlght. No one may talk to the media except Dr Arnold which is always at his convenience. Request for public documents must go thru him, making him the fist clamping down upon the grains of sand. Soon one can expect more grains will be leaking from between his fingers than have been held in the hand. Such policies run counerproductive to the establishment of open and honest government of “we the people”. While they might technically fall within the confines of Iowa’s openess and sunshine laws. they succeed only in breeding public mistrust and comtempt, and rightfully so.

  55. Hooray a rose, we voted for the CCC. BOOOO a thistle, we don’t have the money to complete the bathhouse.

  57. idiotic retoric???????????idiotic retoric???????these blogs are full of nothing BUT! Cultural center is nothing but the ultimate goal of project resore to get the people of Stuart to restore that old burned out church that has sat there for 11 years rotting. Talk about good money after bad? Nothing but retoric got this passed. Lies are now on the table on how it is to be paid for. It isn’t only the school board who’s trying to hoodwink the community, the city council of Stuart is doing some pretty nasty stuff on their own. What a mess. Stay tuned for all the idiotic retoric you can stomach in the coming months. Sooner or later in order to both pass a school bond AND get an aquarium to go with that half million dollar bath house not to mention the things that are mandated like ADA compliant buildings, we will need a freaking magician!!!!!! Jerry V’s vision of Mayberry isn’t going to come soon. Like it or not.

  59. 4:24pm.. Sounds like you need to catch the next bus out of town. If you don’t want to live in a progressive town you might look into a rural address.

  60. Anonymous on November 19, 2007 7:23 pm
  61. 6:38 Why is it when someone speaks the truth such as 4:24 they are the ones being chastized. Maybe you could look for a different county and catch that bus!

  62. Anonymous on November 19, 2007 8:09 pm
  63. Yes 4:24, your post is full of “idiotic retoric”.

  64. anonymous on November 20, 2007 7:34 am
  65. I agree totally 7:23. There’s a few, maybe just one, that loves to call names and tell people to leave if they don’t like to hear the truth or facts that they don’t like to admit too. So you’re right, they should pack up and catch the next bus and quit their flaming people who have a right to an opinion other than their own.
On the subject of the school board. Until you get a different board pres. you aren’t going to see any different action from Mr.Davey. He is going to get away with all he can and then some. He is bound by the freedom of information act to give accurate, complete information. He needs to be in jail, let alone gone.

  66. anonymous on November 20, 2007 4:57 pm
  67. Why does the superintendent interview the applicants for School Board Secretary and not the School Board or at least the Board President? Does he pick someone he can manipulate? Does he know her? Is he the one running our school district? Why do we elect board members? Do the board members really know what is going on in our schools or just rely on someone elses interpretation?

  68. annon on November 20, 2007 5:05 pm
  69. omg! I think the super is more qualified to select a board sec. rather than our fearless (not) board pres.

  70. Anonymous on November 20, 2007 7:06 pm
  71. Ya at the laslt bond issue the board president was asked how many students we have in the high school and he did not know. Yet he was leading the pack to build a bigger than needed building and again it failed. They need to wake up!!

  72. Anonymous on November 20, 2007 7:44 pm
  73. Here’s a fun-filled fact about student life in the Menlo elementary. The students are being served expired milk. Now, I’m sure the “powers that be” (Sloss) figured the kids wouldn’t notice something like an expiration date even though it’s printed in plain site on the carton, but ohhhhhhh how she is wrong.

This has been going on for at least a month and it’s got to the point where several teachers are telling the kids that they might not want to drink the milk during lunch. I’ve heard of at least one girl who felt ill after drinking it but you know the rules of the cafeteria - you can’t leave until all your milk is gone.

I just thought it was time for other parents to be told. Isn’t it just a quality school and admin we have over there?

  74. Anonymous on November 20, 2007 10:33 pm
  75. If milk is kept at the correct temperature it is usually good up to 7 days past the expiration date. That’s the general rule on milk.

  76. anonymous on November 21, 2007 9:39 am
  77. And if it gets older than that, shake it up and use it like sour cream, or buttermilk, less a lot of the butterfat of course. Aren;t we spoiled. I often wonder how people managed with only a cave dug in the ground to keep their products cooled and they didn’t even have pastuerization or other ways to purify their foods.

  78. Anonymous on November 21, 2007 10:51 am
  79. The 7 day rule used to work on milk but has not for several years now. It is sour by the expiration date or day after.
I better tell my kids to check the date before drinking. I know I would have a sour taste in my mouth all day if I drank sour milk. Yuk!!
    Our kids deserve better.

  80. Anonymous on November 21, 2007 10:55 am
  81. Menlo is probably spoiled way before the expiration date. They sit it out when the kindergardeners gp to lunch and leave it untl the fifth graders are done. They don’t leave it in the cooler. They let it get warm, put it back in the cooler, then repeat the process the next day. That is not good. Would you drink your milk if you left it out all day?

And parents are assuming the milk and food their kids is getting is freash, If a teacher is saying skip the milk, then there is something wrong. They wouldn’t say that for no reason.

  82. Anonymous on November 28, 2007 8:25 pm
  83. I bet it’s all Redfieldd’s fault that the milk is spoiled. They get all the good stuff. Isn’t that who we are always blaming for the problems of this district?
