Weekly Recap
April 25, 2008 |
- The Iowa State Fair announced their grandstand concert lineup. Cinderella, Warrant and Night Ranger?? Count me in!
- Like it or not, the ethanol plant may be coming through your land…or their water might be anyway. Should Xenia be allowed to initiate condemnation proceedings against landowners who refuse Xenia’s offer?
- Speaking of being told what to do, does the smoking ban taking effect July 1 bother anyone? I’m not really talking about the smoking aspect of it. I won’t really mind not being around the smoke. What bothers me is that if the governor can sign this and say it’s about saving lives (except for people who are gambling…screw them), what’s to stop the next bill from banning fast food? Should McDonald’s and Burger King get rid of the Big Mac and the Whopper? What about Casey’s pizza? Doesn’t eating fast food cause obesity which causes heart disease which causes death? It does just as much damage as second hand smoke does. While you’re at it, ban being in the sun. It causes skin cancer. Don’t tell us how to kill ourselves, Governor Culver. Or at least make everyone play (or die) by the same rules.
- Iowa has a history of stupid rules though. Did you know in Iowa a man with a mustache may never kiss a woman in public? Yep, it’s against the law. At least it’s not Denver though. There it’s against the law to lend your vacuum to your next-door neighbor. In Louisiana biting someone with your natural teeth is “simple assault,” while biting someone with your false teeth is “aggravated assault.” Does it matter if your teeth are in your mouth at the time?
Enough of the ranting for now. Don’t forget the Kenny Vanlandingham benefit tomorrow. Please take some time out of your day and show up. It’s for a great cause.
And come to Ruby’s for live music tonight and tomorrow night.

Obviously the casinos would be exempt from the somking ban. It has been shown that casinos lose money when there is no smoking - harder to keep them dropping in the coins when they gotta leave to smoke. So since the counties and state are taking their share from the casinos (I think Polk County actually owns Prairie Meadows) then why would they give up that cash? It’s all about the government getting more of your money. The poor saps at the casino pay the high cigarette tax and then fork over more at the casino - state sees $$$.
Xenia’s pipes shouldn’t be that far off the road. What’s the problem - a few farmers who are not making enough off the corn and want more money? Xenia’s going to get what they want, why waste your tax dollars for court proceedings that are not going to change anything.
Yikes, my wife might make me shave!
The farmers should have the right to refuse, it is their land.
And trust me uncle sam, far from it I would say, those farmers are the only ones keeping this country running. It is about time they start being able to do more than break even.
You sir are joke.
Xenia will end up making a larger offer to the farmers. Stick to your guns guys until you get a just settlement. The ethanol plant is going to end up being a big scab on this community. No taxes for 10 years, already they have ruined n. division of which the property owners and the rest of us will have to pay and from looking at s. division it’s starting to show signs of wear from all the gravel and cement trucks going to the ethanol plant. Also, with all the water coming to the plant from Xenia, where do you think the used polluted water will be discharged? Right into our rivers and steams!
Xenia has just as much right to take land as the county or state does when it wants to build a road. All they need do is say “for the public good” and they will get it. It’s probably just an easement anyway and after the pipe is under the ground the farmers can use the top again. Farmers will lose & Xenia will get it for fair market (CHEAP), especially since everyone is on the Ethanol bandwagon these days.
Farmers just breaking even is the joke. They get so many government handouts it is pathetic.
Why should these landowners get more money that all the others that worked with Xenia in the past?
They see an opportunity and are taking advantage of it.
This Blog is getting BoReInG
No more stupid school crap to talk about, I predict massive failure here eventually.
Though I would say the new “plan” for the elementary in Stuart would be worth discussing. Seems like someone thinks they have a blank check to do whatever they want. Someone is going to get burned.
Hey anonymous what is going on now? They got the damn thing passed let’s get the wrecking ball going
or are they screwing around for a different plan? Come on Nate your Mother and Rosie work at the school fill us in
New plan for the elementary, you should see what you can dig up on it. It is very, very interesting. I’m not sure how they are going to get away with it but if they do I say we’ll be paying a lot more for a lot longer than what we voted for. I was afraid something like this might happen, we’ll see. Hopefully they change their mind.
So what is this new thing they want? Suitable playground equipment? An up-to-date kitchen? Nice, working bathrooms? God forbid it’s any of those things.
come on Anonymous on May 1, 2008 4:34 pm let us know what is going on!! I don’t think big Nate wants 2
Lets just say the elementary has gotten very, very, VERY, large, and won’t be utilizing any of the existing structure, at least not immediately. Since the goal is to build it while still using the existing portion for HS, lets just build an entirely new elementary on site. I will let you figure out where that might be, lets just say it is a rather large area right by the school currently being used for other things…
what.ever.
You are just trying to stir up problems. Unless you can tell me flat out - with PROOF - of what these so-called plans are, I’m not going to believe anything you are saying.
I see in the board minutes that Rambo presented the board with plans for a town library attached to the elementary if they were interested. Tell me why my tax dollars are paying for this man to do plans for the city library? Afterall, I thought Neal pulled that one off the table. Is there possibly something that the public is not aware of. Is this what they are trying to do now? And people wonder why we can’t trust our elected representatives. Build the HS and elementary and be done with it.
Hmm new plan for the elementary. That sounds familiar, hmm can’t trust the school board or administration, that also sounsd familiar.
Hmmm, very interesting indeed.
why don’t you all go take a walk on the walking trail. thank you very much Neil. now just shut-up
