The West Central Valley girls outlasted Nodaway Valley in the District final tonight, winning 55-42. The Wildcats will meet the winner of the Ogden/North Polk game on Tuesday night at 7:00 in Perry.

The Wildcats were led by Emily Marnin’s 26 points, including 7 free throws in the last minute. Leah Hammond came off the bench to provide a much-needed spark and finished with 10 points. She was the key factor in igniting the run to begin the second half that put WCV up for good. Big sister Lydia Hammond had some big rebounds down the stretch to seal the victory.

Some observations:

Overall the Wildcats played a solid game. Their full court press forced countless turnovers and resulted in some easy buckets at the offensive end. The Cats did have some trouble identifying Nodaway Valley’s shooters in the closing minutes, but ultimately their free throw shooting and timely rebounds kept the journey to the State Tournament alive.

Leah Hammond played a very good game tonight. The team needed a spark coming out of the locker room at halftime with the score tied, and she provided it. Despite being the smallest player on the court, she had no trouble getting inside among the trees for a couple of layups. Leah was also a big factor in pressuring the ball at the top of the key. She was very active and played smart tonight.

Katie Watson impressed me with her all-out hustle. If she can learn to stay out of foul trouble and improve her footwork, she should help fill Brewer’s shoes next year. She’ll need to keep that intensity if the team wants to advance.

Emily Marnin. What can I really say? She’s the heart and soul of this team, and as she goes, so do they. She can shoot, she can rebound, she can pass, she can dribble well with both hands, and she creates so much havoc at the front of the press opposing coaches have to have nightmares about facing her. She had another overall great game tonight and was extremely clutch at the line.

Good game tonight, ladies! Good luck Tuesday!

–Update 2/21–

The girls came up short last night against North Polk. Despite failing to reach the State Tournament, the season has to be considered a success. Winning the conference and the district is a mighty accomplishment. The WCV community is proud of you, ladies. Congratulations on a very successful year!

  9. Sounds like a regular game. Have you been to a girls game this year?
By the way Katie is a senior, she probably wont make that improvement for the team next year!
